Crochet Hat for Men: 6 Free Patterns Sized by the Inch

An adult man’s head measures 22 to 24 in around, 56 to 61 cm, and that range is published by the Craft Yarn Council, not by a pattern page. Only one of the article pages ranking for this keyword publishes a men’s range at all, and it stops at 23 in, an inch under the standard.

That missing inch is the expensive one. Every crochet hat for men is made smaller than the head on purpose, so a man at the top of the range who starts from 23 in and then subtracts the usual 2 in of ease is aiming at a hat that will not clear his ears.

Every crochet hat for men below carries the head size it fits, the ease built into it, the finished height where one is published, the hook and the yarn. Where a designer leaves a number out, this page says so rather than guessing.

What size is a crochet hat for men

An adult man’s head circumference is 22 to 24 in, 56 to 61 cm. That is the only hat figure in this article from a standards body rather than a designer.

Size on the chartHead circumferenceMetric
Tween20 to 22 in51 to 56 cm
Adult woman21 to 23 in53 to 58.5 cm
Adult man22 to 24 in56 to 61 cm
Head circumference as published by the Craft Yarn Council. The chart has no hat height column and no ease guidance.

The woman and man rows overlap at 22 to 23 in, 56 to 58.5 cm, and the chart offers no tiebreaker. It also carries no height column and no ease guidance, so every height and ease figure below comes from a designer’s page and is labelled that way.

Measure the widest part of the head, above the ears and across the forehead, tape snug and level. That number is the input for every crochet hat for men decision below.

How much smaller than the head a crochet hat for men should be

Smaller by about 2 in on most men’s patterns, though the spread across these six is wider than any single page admits. A hat is worked with negative ease: the finished circumference is deliberately less than the head, so the fabric grips instead of sliding.

Every figure is the designer’s own. The ease column is the subtraction, done on this page.

Across the four patterns that publish both a finished circumference and the head it fits, negative ease runs from 2 in to 5 in, median 2.25 in, which is 8.7 to 20 percent of head circumference. Those figures are calculated here from the designers’ own stated numbers; no hat was made to produce them.

A black and a grey ribbed beanie with folded brims laid flat side by side
Measure a finished hat laid flat and double it. A 10 in flat width is the 20 in circumference a pattern quotes.

Only two of the six name it as ease. Use 2 in as the working default, and treat 5 in as what it is, a heavily stretched rib on a large head that needs a swatch first.

How tall a crochet hat for men should be

9 in from crown to brim edge is where three of these six land, and that is the figure to aim at for a crochet hat for men that covers the ears.

  • Pacifica: 9 in tall, with a 2 in brim folded up.
  • Wanderlust: 9 in tall, unstretched.
  • BBB Basic Bulky: 9 in finished length, or one round less for a mid ear length.
  • Franco: 8 in, 20 cm, largest adult size.
  • Isaac: no total height published. The body is worked to about 8.5 in laid flat and the brim added on top, so the 7 in on that page is the crown only.
  • Silver Beach: no height at all. The only depth guide is the round count, 24 rounds for the adult size.

The Pacifica figure checks out without touching a hook. Its chain of 44 at the published gauge of 16 sts per 4 in gives 11 in of fabric, and folding the 2 in brim up leaves exactly the 9 in the page states. A folded brim costs height twice over, so add the fold depth to the length you work.

Yarn, hook and gauge for a crochet hat for men

Worsted weight on a 5 to 5.5 mm hook, or bulky on a 6 to 7 mm hook, covers every crochet hat for men on this list, and one ball is enough for each.

Franco BeanieBulky, 57 mm, K109 yd, 100 m
BBB Basic Bulky BeanieBulky, 56 mm, Jnot published
Two hook letters and two yarn weights cover the list. Yardage is as published by each designer.

Now the finding the table hides. 4 of these 6 patterns use a hook below the Craft Yarn Council range for their own yarn weight. Medium yarn is listed at 5.5 to 6.5 mm and bulky at 6.5 to 9 mm, yet Silver Beach and Pacifica work medium yarn on a 5 mm hook, Isaac works bulky on 5 mm, and BBB works bulky on 6 mm.

The dense fabric a crochet hat for men needs, worked in olive worsted yarn with a wooden crochet hook
Dense fabric on a small hook for the yarn weight. Gaps this tight are what keep wind out.

That is a habit, not four separate mistakes. A hat is one of the few crochet items where loose fabric is a defect: gaps let wind through, and a relaxed fabric slides up off the ears within an hour.

Two gaps are worth knowing first. Isaac publishes no stitch or row gauge, only a check that the first 8 rounds measure 4 in across, and its 315 yd, 288 m figure is the whole ball rather than measured usage. BBB never publishes a total yardage for its adult large.

Ribbed brim: in the round, or flat and seamed

Four of the six work in the round from a magic ring, and two build a flat piece first and seam it. That choice changes what can go wrong in a crochet hat for men far more than it changes how the hat looks.

Silver Beach, Wanderlust, Isaac and BBB start at the crown with 12 dc into a ring. Silver Beach works its ridged brim in the round too, in the third loop of the half double crochet, and Isaac works a front post brim onto the hat. Nothing is sewn.

Pacifica is worked sideways: chain 44, 38 rows of back loop ribbing, then the last row is joined to the chain to make a tube and the crown gathered shut. Franco uses a chain of 7 and 50 rib rows folded into a band, with the body worked in the round off it.

None of the six works over a stitch multiple, which is worth stating because a multiple is exactly where a blanket fails at the end of row one. A hat begun at a magic ring has no foundation chain to get wrong, and the two flat pieces repeat one row, so the only number to hold is the row count.

21 in finished for a 23 in head, medium yarn, 5 mm hook, one 256 yd, 234 m ball. Sizes of 15, 18 and 21 in are published, for heads of 17, 21 and 23 in. Lemon peel and star stitch carry the texture. Free pattern at Salty Pearl Crochet.

Pacifica Beanie, by Suzanne Carlson

17 in around, 9 in tall with a 2 in folded brim, one adult large size, medium yarn, 5 mm hook, about 200 yd. A ribbed rectangle seamed into a tube. The head size it targets is never published, so swatch first. Free pattern at Crafting Each Day.

Wanderlust Beanie, by Kirsten Holloway

The largest here: 10 in wide laid flat, so 20 in around, 9 in tall, for a 25 in head. Medium yarn, 5.5 mm hook, 225 yd. Half double crochet throughout, stitch gauge only. Free pattern at Kirsten Holloway Designs.

Isaac Beanie, by Rachel of Desert Blossom Crafts

22 in around with a 7 in crown for a 24 to 25 in head, chenille bulky on a 5 mm hook. Sizes of 20.5 in, 22 in and 23.5 in with a 7.5 in crown for a 26 in head are published, though only the middle one is free. The one page here that explains negative ease. Free pattern at Desert Blossom Crafts.

Franco Beanie, by Crystal Marin

The fastest one. Bulky yarn, 7 mm hook, 109 yd, 100 m, and 8 in, 20 cm tall for a 23 in, 58.4 cm head. Back loop single crochet ribbing throughout. Its size column is headed by head circumference, not finished hat size, which is easy to misread. Free pattern at ChristaCoDesign.

BBB Basic Bulky Beanie, by Rhondda Mol

Eleven sizes, preemie to adult large, all double crochet, no ribbed brim, 6 mm hook. The adult large fits a 24 in head at a 9 in finished length. Finished circumference is never published, so ease cannot be checked. The original yarn is discontinued, substitutes listed. Free pattern at Oombawka Design Crochet.

Where a crochet hat for men goes wrong

Three failure modes account for almost every crochet hat for men that gets ripped out, and all three are decided early.

It will not clear the ears. Ease was subtracted twice: once by the designer, who published a finished size smaller than the head, and again by the maker who read it as a head size. A 22 in finished hat is for a 24 in head.

The brim flares and the crown ruffles. Too many increase rounds before the straight body, or a hook too large for the yarn. A crown that ripples instead of lying flat has had one increase round too many. Stop increasing when the flat circle reaches the diameter the pattern names.

It rides up off the ears. The ribbing was worked at the same tension as the body, so it has no grip left. Why one stitch grips harder than another is the same mechanics at blanket scale, covered in the moss stitch breakdown.

Sizing up for a bigger head

25 in is the largest head published on any of these six pages, on the Wanderlust Beanie, and it already sits above the top of the standard adult man row.

  • Start from a pattern that publishes the size. Isaac publishes an extra large at 23.5 in around with a 7.5 in crown for a 26 in head.
  • Go up a hook. Wanderlust uses the hook as its sizing tool, 5.5 mm for its published size and 5 mm for a smaller head. The lever runs upward too.
  • Add an increase round. On any hat worked in the round, one more increase round before the straight body widens the whole hat.

Questions people ask

What size should a crochet hat for men be?

Measure the head first. The published adult man range is 22 to 24 in, 56 to 61 cm, and the finished hat should be about 2 in smaller than the measurement you take.

How much yarn does a crochet hat for men take?

One ball. The published amounts run from 109 yd, 100 m in bulky to 256 yd, 234 m in medium weight.

Should a men’s beanie be tight?

Snug, not tight. The fabric should stretch to meet the head rather than sit slack on it, which is what 2 in of negative ease produces.

What hook size is right for a crochet hat for men?

5 to 5.5 mm for medium yarn and 6 to 7 mm for bulky, deliberately tighter than the recommended range for those weights. Density keeps wind out.

How tall should a crochet hat for men be?

9 in from crown to brim edge covers the ears. Work the fold depth as extra length on any pattern with a turned up brim.

Can a woman’s beanie pattern be made for a man?

Often yes, because the two chart rows overlap at 22 to 23 in. Compare the finished circumference against the measured head, then adjust with the hook.
