Yarn amounts and finished sizes

Yardage figures are calculated from stated yarn weight, hook size and finished dimensions using recognised craft standards. They are a sound starting point, not a guarantee. Two people working the same pattern with the same yarn routinely use different amounts, because tension is personal. Buy one extra skein of a dye lot you like. It is far cheaper than running out.

Gauge

A gauge swatch is the single step most likely to save a blanket, and the one most often skipped. If your gauge differs from a pattern, your finished blanket will not measure what the pattern says, no matter how carefully you count.

US and UK terminology

Crochet terms are not universal. A double crochet in United States terminology is not the same stitch as a double crochet in United Kingdom terminology. We write in US terms and say so on any page where it could matter. If a pattern you follow elsewhere uses UK terms, convert before you begin.

Safety

Loose weave blankets, long tassels and fringe are not suitable for infant sleep. If you are making a blanket for a baby, follow current guidance from a paediatric authority in your country rather than a craft blog, and choose a dense stitch and a washable fibre.
